We tell girls they’re pretty when they put on a dress or makeup or jewelry. We tell boys they’re handsome just for not being a mess. Meanwhile it’s considered to look “ridiculous” for a guy to paint his nails, to shave his legs, or to wear makeup and it’s the exact same thing! Like a woman “isn’t trying” if she doesn’t wear makeup, her natural lip or hair color is “dull” or “tired,” and basically all body hair is frowned upon. There’s such a weird pressure on girls and women to show ostentatious effort in looking different from how they naturally look.
